Enjoy quality time with the people you love

Water has a way of slowing everyone down. A pond becomes the place where you pause, reflect, and gather. It gives your yard a focal point where friends and family come together while nature unfolds in front of you. From wildlife to lush plantings, all you have to do is sit back and take it in.

Ecosystem ponds, built to balance themselves

Every pond we build in Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, and across Central Iowa is a naturally balanced ecosystem pond. Biological and mechanical filtration, aquatic plants, rocks and gravel, and steady circulation all work together so the water stays clear with very little effort from you. The pond behaves the way a healthy natural pond does, which is exactly the point.

That is a different approach from a traditional koi pond, which is built around the fish and often relies on bare walls and heavy equipment that needs constant hands-on care. We build ecosystem ponds because they look natural, age beautifully, and are far easier to own. Fish are an optional addition, never the focus. If you want koi or goldfish, an ecosystem pond supports them well, and if you would rather just enjoy the water and the wildlife that finds it, the pond is complete on its own.

Large ponds and dirt bottom ponds

Along with lined backyard ecosystem ponds, Just Add Water builds and cares for larger ponds, including natural earth-bottom ponds. If you knew our old dirt bottom ponds page, it now lives here, because the same team handles the full range.

Large and dirt bottom ponds suit acreages, farms, and rural properties around Ames, Indianola, and the surrounding communities. These projects start with a site visit, because soil, slope, and the water source decide what is possible. From there we shape the pond, manage inflow and overflow, and can add aeration, planted edges, and beach areas. If swimming is the goal, take a look at our recreational ponds built for exactly that.

What is included in a pond build

A finished pond is more than a hole with water in it. Every build starts with excavation shaped to the design, with shelves for plants and a depth that suits Iowa winters. Underlayment and a quality liner go down next, then boulders and gravel that lock everything together and give the pond its natural look.

From there we build the waterfall and stream that give the pond its sound and movement, and install the filtration and circulation that keep the water healthy: a skimmer to pull debris off the surface and a biological filter where beneficial bacteria do their work. Aquatic plants finish the ecosystem, softening the edges and balancing the water. Many owners add underwater lighting so the pond glows after dark, and an auto-fill system so the water level takes care of itself. You choose the features, and we price them clearly before work begins.

Timeline and what to expect

Most backyard ponds come together in a matter of days once we break ground. Larger ponds with long streams take longer, and weather always has a say in an Iowa spring. After your on-site consultation you get a clear quote and a realistic timeline, and we keep you updated from excavation day to the first time you turn the waterfall on.

Every project follows the same careful path from first conversation to final walkthrough. You can read the full step-by-step on our process page. Spring and summer fill up quickly in Central Iowa, so reaching out early is the best way to get on the schedule.

Recent pond projects near you

In Polk City, the Tranquil Backyard Escape turned an ordinary yard into a complete ecosystem pond with a waterfall, stream, and lush plantings the family now gathers around every evening.

In Ankeny, Bringing Colorado to Iowa recreated the feel of a mountain stream, with tumbling water, big character boulders, and lighting that carries the scene into the night. Both projects started with the same on-site consultation we offer every homeowner in Des Moines and the surrounding communities.

“The folks at Just Add Water built our pond this spring. It was a backyard with nothing going on and they created a water masterpiece. We are beyond happy with the way it turned out. Connor and his crew made a magical place in our yard. The waterfall sounds are amazing. Soooo chill. We love the pond! I can’t recommend them highly enough. They are great to work with.”

“We had Just Add Water do a spring clean out of an existing pond last spring. We were so happy with the service that we hired them to come back later last summer and more than double our pond size, add a second waterfall, and an intake bay. Chris and the whole team are excellent listeners, working with us closely from planning through completion. We couldn't be happier with the craftsmanship or the results. Hard working team that knows their stuff.”

  • A well-built ecosystem pond needs less care than most people expect. Plan on a spring cleanout, occasional skimmer and filter cleaning, water treatments, and a fall or winter shutdown. You can handle much of this yourself, or let us take care of it with a single visit or a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly maintenance plan.

  • Yes. Along with lined backyard ecosystem ponds, we build larger ponds, including dirt bottom ponds and recreational ponds you can swim in. Every large project starts with a site visit so we can look at the soil, the water source, and how you plan to use the pond.
