What’s The Process?

“The process for…?” asks Angela slowly.

“The spring pond maintenance process,” answers Adam. “Spring is coming, it’s practically here already, and our pond looks like it’s hibernating. How often do we need to clean the pond and stuff?

Angela stands up and looks out the kitchen window into the backyard. “Yeah, you have a good point there. It does look like a teenager that’s slept in until 2 pm,” she says only half-jokingly.

Adam snorts a laugh. “Well, I’m pretty sure our pond contractor said something about his blog having information on it. Why don’t we look there and see what we can find on spring pond cleanings?” Angela smiles and nods. “That’s a great idea! Let’s do it right now,” she says as she takes out her phone.

Here’s what the couple finds on the pond contractor’s blog:

Spring Pond Maintenance In 7 Steps

  1. Initial inspection for damages and more
  2. Drain the pond
  3. Move any fish to a temporary tub of water
  4. Power wash and flush the pond sides, bottom, and filters
  5. Trim and repot any plants
  6. Move any rocks that have settled out of place
  7. Reassemble the pond

What’s Involved In These Steps

The initial inspection involves checking the pumps and plumbing. We don’t want any cracks or damages affecting the water flow. We also check for liner damage and leaks. You can fix leaks in one of four ways.

Draining the pond lets us clean it more thoroughly. We drain it down to about 6 inches. This is the most important step in the spring pond maintenance process. It lets us do the next few steps more easily.

Removing the fish happens after draining it down. We put them in a tub full of their old pond water. The old pond water makes them feel comfortable and they won’t go into shock. We make sure it’s in a shady spot so they don’t get too hot.

Power washing the pond helps get rid of the gunk and muck buildup. This helps it look cleaner and be healthier for your fish. We don’t remove all of it though! It’s part of a healthy, natural pond ecosystem and needs to be there. We clean out the filters so they can keep your pond cleaner and clearer.

Trimming and repotting plants is like giving your pond a haircut. It’ll look nice and neat, ready for spring!

Moving rocks around helps keep the pond looking as good as it did when you first go it. Rocks can settle over time, especially with melting snow.

Reassembling the pond includes refilling the water, making it safe for fish, and slowly reintroducing the fish. It takes about 15 minutes to slowly reintroduce the fish. This keeps them from going into shock from the new water.

“His blog really did have the spring pond maintenance info we were looking for!” says Adam happily. Anglea nods, but with a slight frown. “Well, it’s obvious we need it, but before we call, is there anything else we should know?”
