How a pondless waterfall works

The water tumbles over the falls and down the stream, then disappears into a basin hidden under the rocks and gravel. A pump in the basin sends it back to the top. With no open pond, there is nothing to clean in the usual sense. Most of the care is keeping the basin topped off, clearing debris and a quick seasonal check.

When a pond is the better choice

A pond gives you things a pondless feature cannot: water lilies, frogs, dragonflies and birds stopping for a drink, and fish if you want them. If you picture sitting by the water, not just hearing it, a pond is worth the extra cost and care.
