Stuck in the Planning Phase? Here's What Happens When You Finally Make the Call
You know the signs. There are 47 ponds saved to your Pinterest board. You've watched every Aquascape installation video on YouTube twice. You've read so many pond blog posts (maybe even ours) that you could practically write your own. You've measured your backyard, sketched out a few ideas on a notepad, and maybe even priced out some pumps online.
And yet, you still haven't picked up the phone.
If that sounds familiar, you are not alone. Some of the most enthusiastic, well-researched homeowners we talk to spent six months, a year, or longer in the research phase before reaching out.
They wanted to feel ready. They wanted the perfect plan. They wanted to walk into the conversation already knowing all the answers. Here is what we want every Central Iowa homeowner to know: you do not need a perfect plan to make the first call. In fact, the perfect plan is something we build together.
Why So Many Pond Projects Stall Before They Start
The internet is a wonderful tool for inspiration, but it can also become a trap. Every photo you save raises a new question. Every video you watch introduces a new feature you didn't know existed. Every blog post adds another opinion to weigh.
Before long, the project that was supposed to bring peace and beauty to your backyard starts to feel overwhelming. You second guess your ideas. You wonder if you are picking the wrong style, the wrong location, or the wrong size. You worry about asking a "dumb question" or wasting a contractor's time.
So you keep researching. Another pin. Another video. Another tab open in your browser.
The truth is, no amount of online research will ever make you feel completely ready. The kind of clarity you are looking for doesn't come from more content. It comes from a conversation.
What the First Call Actually Looks Like
When you call Just Add Water, you are not committing to a project. You are not signing anything. You are not even committing to a quote yet. The first conversation is exactly that: a conversation.
We are not going to grill you on technical specifications. We are not going to expect you to know the gallons per hour you need from your pump, or whether you want a BioFalls or a Signature Series Skimmer. That is our job to figure out, and we have been doing it across Central Iowa for nearly two decades.
Instead, we are going to ask you about your life.
The Questions We Ask, and Why
Most of the first call is spent on lifestyle questions. We want to understand how you actually live in your home and your yard, because that is what determines what kind of water feature will make you happy for years to come.
Here are some of the things we'll ask:
- How do you picture using your outdoor space? Are you imagining quiet morning coffee next to a gentle waterfall, or hosting summer cookouts where the kids can splash around in a stream?
- Who lives in your home? Do you have small children, grandchildren who visit often, or pets that will be curious about the water?
- What can you see from inside the house? A pond you can't see from your kitchen window or living room is a missed opportunity, and we want to position your feature where you'll actually enjoy it every day.
- How much time do you want to spend on maintenance? Some homeowners love the meditative work of tending to their pond. Others want to enjoy the view and let us handle the upkeep. Both are valid, and they lead to different design choices.
- What sounds appeal to you? A gentle trickle is very different from a roar. The size and design of your waterfall directly shapes what your backyard sounds like.
- Do you want to attract wildlife? A properly designed ecosystem pond brings in dragonflies, songbirds, and the occasional curious frog. Some clients love that. Others want something more contained.
- What is your comfort level with the investment? We work with a wide range of budgets. Being honest with us up front helps us recommend something that fits your life rather than stretching you in directions you don't want to go.
None of these questions have right or wrong answers. They are simply how we get to know you and your vision.
Why Lifestyle Questions Matter More Than Technical Ones
Here is something we've learned after installing water features across Des Moines, Ankeny, Johnston, Indianola, Ames, and the surrounding communities: the homeowners who are happiest with their finished pond are the ones whose project was designed around their actual life, not someone else's Pinterest board.
A gorgeous photo of a 30-foot stream cascading down a hillside is inspiring, but if your yard is flat and your idea of relaxation is a small reflective pool next to your patio, that photo is leading you in the wrong direction. A massive koi pond looks impressive, but if you travel often or simply don't want to think about pond chemistry, it might bring you stress instead of joy.
When we know how you live, we can design something that fits seamlessly into your routine. That is the difference between a water feature you tolerate and one you cannot imagine your home without.
You Are Not Wasting Our Time
This is one of the most common worries we hear from people who waited too long to call. They were afraid of being a bother. They were afraid we would judge them for not knowing exactly what they wanted. They were afraid the project would not be "big enough" to be worth our time.
We hear you, and we want to put those concerns to rest.
2023 Aquascape Contractor of the Year. Nearly two decades of local experience guiding homeowners through projects of every size.
Helping you figure out what you want is not an inconvenience. It is a core part of what we do. Whether you are dreaming of a small pondless waterfall tucked next to your front walkway or a large ecosystem pond that becomes the centerpiece of your backyard, the first call is the same. We listen, we ask questions, and we help you start to see what is possible.
What Happens After the First Call
If the conversation feels right and you'd like to take the next step, we'll schedule an on-site consultation. That is when we walk your property, look at the space with you, talk through ideas in context, and start sketching out what your project could actually become.
If you decide you are not quite ready, that is fine too. You will leave the call with a much clearer picture of what is possible, what makes sense for your specific space, and what to think about as you continue to plan. There is no pressure on either side.
But here is the thing: most homeowners we talk to wish they had called sooner. The conversation almost always brings clarity that no amount of online research can match.
The Best Time to Plan a Pond Is Right Now
Spring and early summer are our busiest seasons in Iowa, and our installation calendar fills up quickly. If you are thinking about a project for this year, the sooner we start the conversation, the more options you have for timing and design.
Even if you are planning ahead for next year, an early call gives us time to design something thoughtful rather than rushed. The best projects are the ones we have time to dream about together.
Ready to Stop Researching and Start Building?
You've already done the hard part. The only thing left is the conversation that turns your vision into a real project in your real backyard.
