At Iowa Waterscapes, we’re always up for a challenge. When a homeowner in Adel, Iowa, approached us with the idea of transforming their old hot tub space into a pond, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to create something truly unique. The homeowners had previously enjoyed one of our water systems at their old house and were missing the soothing sounds of flowing water in their new home.
The Challenge
The project was unique from the start. The old hot tub had left behind a concrete slab and rebar, which we needed to work around. Our goal was to create a pond with a 180-degree view, visible from the firepit to the patio, and even from inside the house. We wanted to incorporate the existing bench into the design and ensure that the homeowners could enjoy the pond from multiple angles.
The Process
We began by tearing out the old hot tub and removing the rebar and concrete. We then filled in the area with dirt, ensuring a level surface for the pond. We constructed a boulder wall and terraced the area to create a multi-level design. The stream would start at the bench, flow around the boulders, and end in the pond area.
As we worked, we encountered some challenges. Rain delays slowed our progress, and we had to work with large boulders, which made it difficult to create the desired stream flow. However, with some creative problem-solving and a better selection of rocks, we were able to create a beautiful waterfall feature.
The Result
After a week of hard work, the pond was complete. Despite the challenges of rain and the remnants of the old hot tub, we were able to create a stunning water feature that met all of our goals. The pond is visible from the pool, deck, and even the kitchen, providing a beautiful and relaxing view from any angle.
We were able to incorporate the old bench into the design, creating a welcoming seating area next to the stream. The addition of landscape and aquatic plants, as well as lighting, brought the feature to life and added the finishing touches to the project.
The homeowners were thrilled with the result, and we were proud to have created a unique pond that transformed their backyard into a peaceful oasis.
