Pond Renovations are a large part of Just Add Water’s business

Just Add Water completes many types of jobs.  These vary from new construction to pond renovations.  While they do a lot of new pond construction, pond renovations remain a large part of their business.  Pond renovations can include anything from a small waterfall rebuild to a complete tear out and redo.  Pond renovations are usually completed for one of multiple reasons.  These reasons can include making a non-functional water garden work to a client just wanting to go bigger and better.  At Created in Johnston, Just Add Water has made two pond renovations over the years.  The advancement of these pond renovations bu Just Add Water are shown in the following.

Created In Johnston, Two Pond Renovations

In the summer of 2006, Just Add Water received the go ahead to replace an old landscape display pond at Created In Johnston. Created In Johnston is a concrete statuary business in Johnston, Iowa. The plan was a win-win for both businesses. Created In Johnston would receive a low maintenance water garden that would add interest to their business and Just Add Water would have a public display pond to send potential clients to look at on their own time. The pond would also serve as a classroom for their annual “Hands On Spring Clean Out Class”.

The pond renovation took place in October of 2006. It included a simple stream with waterfalls and a low maintenance pond with fish and plants. The project was a success and served as a great display. By 2010, Just Add Water decided the display pond should show off their  more advanced pond building techniques.

In the spring of 2011, Just Add Water again got permission for a pond renovation at Created In Johnston. It was time for an upgrade! This time around they planned to use some larger boulders, add a wetland filter and vanishing edge skimmer, build a larger waterfall with more water flow, install a second stream/waterfall system, and highlight it all with LED night lighting. The vanishing edge skimmer would include an over sized basin to make the water garden more sustainable (When it rains the water that hits the water garden footprint is collected and stored in the over sized basin. It is then used to replenish the water that is lost to evaporation in the following days, weeks, and months).

Water spills out of the pond into the over sized vanishing edge basin. A pump here then returns the water to begin the waterfall and stream.

The pond renovation was completed during July of 2011. The wetland filter provides great water quality and the over sized basin has preformed better than expected. No extra water was added to the system between August and December of 2011 even though Des Moines, Iowa was experiencing the beginning of a drought. During the drought of 2012, water was only added twice to the pond between April and December after the pond was sturned on in April.
